1970年代以降に放映されたロボットアニメが多数登場する人気シミュレーションRPGシリーズの1つで、『スーパーロボット大戦α』の続編。キャラクターボイスは原作そのままに声優が熱演。各ロボットの戦闘ごとにテーマ曲に切り替わり、必殺技は原作どおりのムービーが再現されるなど、ファンにはうれしい仕掛けが一杯だ。「マジンガーZ」や「機動戦士ガンダム」などのシリーズおなじみの顔ぶれが登場するほか、新たに「銀河旋風ブライガー」「戦闘メカ ザブングル」「機動新世紀ガンダムX」「∀ガンダム」の4作品が登場。
システムも若干変更され、攻撃・防御で仲間を援護する「援護行動システム」が加わり、熟練度によって難易度が変化する「熟練度システム」も、ゲーム中の行動によって熟練度が上昇する形となった。本作は『α』の続編であるが、『α』を知らなくても問題なくゲームを進めることができるので、初めて遊ぶ人でも十分に楽しめるゲームだろう。
